Eligibility for Sick Leave Benefits in Portugal

To qualify for sick leave benefits in Portugal, employees must meet the following conditions: 

  1. Work Contribution Period: Employees must have contributed to the social security system for at least 6 months. This requirement can be fulfilled through consecutive or cumulative periods, including the month when the illness occurs. 

  1. Medical Certification: The employee’s inability to work must be medically certified by a licensed healthcare professional and recognized by the social security system. 

  1. Waiting Period: Benefits begin only on the fourth day of incapacity, with the first three days being unpaid. 

Payment Structure for Sick Leave 

Sick leave payments in Portugal are calculated as a percentage of an employee's regular wages and vary depending on the duration of the illness: 

  • 55% of regular wages for incapacity lasting 4 to 30 days

  • 60% of regular wages for incapacity lasting 31 to 90 days

  • 70% of regular wages for incapacity lasting 91 days to 1 year

  • 75% of regular wages for incapacity lasting more than 1 year

Additional Benefits for Low Earners 

To support low-income employees, Portugal provides an additional 5% increase in the sickness allowance for beneficiaries who earn less than EUR 500 per month

Employer and Employee Contributions 

The sick leave system is funded through contributions from both employers and employees: 

  • Employers contribute 23.75% of an employee’s gross monthly salary to social security. 

  • Employees contribute 11% of their gross salary. 

These contributions cover various social protections, including sick leave benefits, pensions, and unemployment support.
