Latvia has a remote work visa designed for citizens of third countries who are either employed by companies or are self-employed individuals registered in an Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) member state. A third country is defined as one that is not a member of the European Union and whose citizens do not enjoy the European Union right to free movement. This initiative allows professionals to live and work in Latvia while performing their duties remotely for up to one year. The visa can be extended to another year upon expiration.

To qualify, applicants must meet certain criteria, including earning a monthly salary at least 2.5 times the average gross monthly salary in Latvia from the previous year. This visa is an excellent opportunity for remote workers seeking a change of scenery, offering a unique blend of professional flexibility and cultural exploration in the heart of Europe.

Required Documents for the Remote Work Visa

To apply for a Remote Work Visa in Latvia, you’ll need the following documents:

  • Valid Travel Document: Ensure your passport or travel document is up to date.

  • Completed Visa Application Form: Fill out and sign the visa form.

  • Recent Photograph: Provide a photo taken within the last six months.

  • Health Insurance: A copy of your health insurance policy that meets Latvian requirements.

  • Proof of Residence: Documents confirming your intended place of residence in Latvia.

  • Employment Verification: If employed or self-employed, submit a document from a tax administration in an OECD member state verifying your current employment status.

  • State Fee Payment: Proof of payment for the visa application fee and related services.

About Latvia's Digital Nomad Visa

Introduced in early 2022, Latvia’s Digital Nomad Visa allows remote workers and freelancers to live in Latvia for up to two years maximum while working for companies abroad. It’s important to note that this visa permits you to stay in Latvia, but does not allow you to work for a Latvian employer or receive social assistance, as the visa holder will not be socially insured in Latvia.

This initiative highlights Latvia’s dedication to attracting global talent, making it an attractive option for digital nomads and remote professionals looking for a new base.
