Current and Future Work Hour Limits in Colombia

To gradually reduce the standard workweek from 48 to 42 hours, Colombia implemented a phased reduction of working hours starting on July 15, 2023. As part of this transition, the maximum workweek was reduced to 46 hours as of July 15, 2024.

Effective July 15, 2025, the maximum weekly hours will decrease to 44, and by July 15, 2026, the limit will further reduce to 42 hours. These reductions will not result in salary reductions for employees.

Daily Work Hour Distribution

Employers have some flexibility in how they distribute working hours throughout the week. The law permits a variable daily schedule as long as the weekly limit is maintained. Key regulations include:

  • A minimum of 4 continuous hours per workday.

  • A maximum of 9 hours per day without additional overtime pay.

  • The average working hours per week must not exceed the legally mandated limit.

Implications for Colombian Employers

Employers must consider several key implications as Colombia's working hour limits decrease. Workforce planning will be essential, requiring companies to review their staffing models to ensure compliance with the new regulations.

Additionally, businesses may need to adjust productivity strategies and optimize workflows to maintain efficiency despite the reduced working hours. Legal compliance is also crucial, as employers must closely monitor employee schedules to prevent exceeding the permitted weekly hours and avoid potential penalties. These reductions will not result in salary reductions for employees, so businesses should plan accordingly.
