Romania's labour code mandates that the national minimum wage is tied to a standard work schedule of 8 hours per day and 40 hours per week. As of July 1, 2024, the minimum wage has been set at RON 3,700 per month, equating to RON 22.024 per hour for a full 168-hour month.
This is equivalent to GBP 625.69/ EUR 744.62 per month or GBP 3.72/ EUR 4.43 per hour. Prior to this, the minimum wage was RON 3,300.00 per month. This was equivalent to GBP 558.05/ EUR 664.10 per month or GBP 3.38/ EUR 4.02 per hour, an increase of 12%.
Payroll Frequency in Romania
In Romania, salaries must be paid at least once a month. Work conducted between the first and last day of the month is typically paid on the last working day of the month. The exact salary amounts and payment schedules are determined through negotiations between the employer and employee.
Employee Bonuses
Unlike some other countries, Romania does not have mandatory requirements for paying bonuses to employees. This means that any bonuses are at the discretion of the employer.
Implications for Employers
Employers must ensure they comply with the new minimum wage regulations effective July 1, 2024. This requires updating payroll systems to reflect the increased minimum wage of RON 3,700 per month or RON 22.024 per hour.
