The Republic of Uzbekistan is a secular, unitary constitutional republic in Central Asia. The country is divided into 12 separate provinces, with Uzbek as the official language. Known for its mining industry, Uzbekistan has made recent strides to diversify its economy, which is gradually becoming a market economy. With a focus on natural gas and renewable energy, Uzbekistan is the largest producer of electricity in Central Asia.

Employment contracts in Uzbekistan must be in writing. The employment contract may be for an indefinite term, for a fixed term not longer than five years, or until the contract work is complete.The employment contract must state:

  • the employer’s main location and the location where the employee will work,

  • the employee’s job function,

  • the date the employee will begin work,

  • the employee’s salary and any other compensation,

  • the term of the contract if it is for a fixed term.

The standard workweek in Uzbekistan is 40 hours. The workday is eight hours if the employee works five days per week or seven hours if they work six days per week. Overtime is allowed but the employee must receive overtime pay.

Employees are entitled to paid sick leave in Uzbekistan with no legal limit on the time taken.

Female employees receive 126 days of maternity leave in Uzbekistan. Expectant mothers are entitled to 70 days of maternity leave before the due date and 56 days after the birth. During her maternity leave, the mother can receive a social security benefit.

Bonuses are not required in Uzbekistan.

Employees receive a minimum of 15 days of paid annual leave in Uzbekistan. Eligibility for annual leave begins after six months of work.

In Uzbekistan, the public holidays are:

  • New Year’s Day

  • International Women’s Day

  • Navruz

  • Remembrance Day

  • Eid al-Fitr

  • Independence Day

  • Eid al-Adha

  • Teachers Day

  • Constitution Day

Uzbekistan has universal health care but, in practice, many costs are paid for out-of-pocket.

An employer may only terminate an employee in Uzbekistan for a reason, including changes to the business or issues related to the employee. A collective agreement may require that the employees' union or employee representatives’ consent to the termination. Employees are entitled to written notice of dismissal. The notice period is either two weeks or two months, depending on the reason for the dismissal. If the employee is entitled to severance, it is one month of salary for every two years of service to the employer.
